My New Year's resolution is to work softer. This year I want to do less, be less, because I've been learning that when I put in less effort things actually turn out better and I feel better. My psychiatrist has also added a mood stabiliser to my mix of anti-depressants and they make me feel a bit dopey, at least while I'm getting used to them. So I've been doing a whole lot of nothing, and even the stuff I am doing is pretty piecemeal. It's hard to get used to.

So I have nothing crafty to share. But I do have a tadpole update!

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy and cold.  It snowed a little last night, just enough to leave riffles in the grass and some larger white patches in the fields.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a large flock of sparrows, several mourning doves, and a starling.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 1/11/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I've seen a male cardinal.

EDIT 1/11/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen one female and two male cardinals.

EDIT 1/11/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Gosh, isn't it great

when you finally confess your love to the guy you've been pining after for half your life, and it turns out that you have a perfectly aligned and complementary set of kinks? Nobody has to compromise and agree to sometimes do the thing they're not that into or, conversely, never do the thing they're totally into. Nobody's turned off by the mere thought of any of it, every conversation is an ongoing saga of "yes, and".

I guess that's one more advantage of being fictional!

Aidan smiled at the driver as he hefted the large plastic tote full of onions. He balanced the folded jacket that the younger man had given Aidan on his head, then put the bin atop the jacket. “Thank you for the ride, Persia.”

“Just bring a sample of those pickled onions that you were talking about. I’ve never had them.” She waved, then rolled backward down the driveway.

Aidan walked easily to the garage door, but had to set the bin down to let himself in.

Today is mostly cloudy.  It rained again at some point last night.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a large flock of sparrows and a mourning dove.

I heard the owl hooting all night too.  :D

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 1/10/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 1/10/26 -- I put out a fresh suet cake and refilled the hopper feeder.  Sparrows have been mobbing.  There is now a starling in addition to the mourning dove, but he isn't trying to squeeze in there either -- he knows he is outnumbered.

EDIT 1/10/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

It is 5 PM.  The sun has recently set but the sky is still fairly light.

I am done for the night.

Summary: Biosecurity officers have identified and captured a lesser white-fronted goose in Footscray, Victoria. Due to the biosecurity risk to Australian bird life and the poultry industry, the bird is not permitted to remain in Australia and will be humanely destroyed.

You'll laugh, it was that weird.

I dreamed that I was going to sleep. I had found a bed - not my actual bed, just a bed! - and snuggled down to sleep. And then I woke up a little (really woke up, not dream woke up) in my own bed, snuggled up nice and cozy, and drifted between the two beds, real and dream, for a little bit before falling back asleep for real.

:: At the food bank, Aidan has an interesting conversation with Beverly. They find a great deal of common, fertile ground. Part of the Edison’s Mirror universe. ::

Sweat crept slowly down the hollow of Aidan’s spine as he moved yet another box full of mature yellow onions. The storage rack looked delicate, with thin wires forming the shelves, but he could stand on the rows of boxes on the top shelf and there wasn’t the slightest wobble.

There also was no way to fit another row of containers on the rack.

He shook his head. “I’m sorry, we’ll have to find another place to store the new delivery, madam. I could build slatted storage boxes of wood, but that would take time, and the delivery is either going to clutter up the only walking space in this area or it’s going to be placed in a semi-public area, which is another problem.”

Kayden stared up at him. “Get off that rack before the safety person has kittens," he hissed.

“Certainly.” Aidan crouched, rested his forearm across the bin beside his heels, and simply let his feet slide out and toward the concrete floor. He landed lightly, his knees bending until his hips and heels nearly touched, then stood and dusted his hands. “If you need an idea to encourage the patrons to take more onions, it’s easy to pickle the slices, turning them into a versatile food that requires no more preparation or cooking.”

Today is cloudy and cool. Last night it rained with high winds.

I fed the birds. I've seen a few sparrows.

I put out water for the birds.

What I thought was a branch blown down in the house yard is actually the contorta willow sapling that died. I may see if I can make something from it.

EDIT 1/9/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I raked another quadrant around the firepit.

Challenge #5

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts

This is always the hardest challenge for me. I have a tough time asking for wishes. But let's give it a whirl.

1. A romantic John Sheppard/Rodney McKay icon. I was setting up the latest Romancing McShep collection for its Feb launch, and realized I needed a new icon. I've dusted off an older one, but I'd love a new look. Romancing McShep 2026.

2. Encouraging comments on anything I've posted to AO3. Sometimes it's really hard to keep the writing mojo working, and a few words of encouragement help enormously. My AO3 page

3. Artwork for any of my stories. I love seeing artists' interpretations of the written word and fandom is so damn talented. My AO3 page

4. A tarot reading. Strictly for fun.

5. A Macy's gift card. I know, this is a weird financial request, but I figured if someone received a gift card for Christmas they have no intention of using, well, I've got my eye on a pair of fleece pajama pants with pockets.

Pockets are incredibly important. *wise nod*

:: Aidan and Ed have a very grim conversation. Vic wakes early, and the trio begin planning in earnest. Part of the Edison’s Mirror universe. ::

A soft, breathy squeak drew both Aidan and Ed’s attention to Vic, sleeping on the pallet in front of the yellow sofa. Ed scrambled off the green sofa and hurried to press his hands to Vic’s shoulder and forearm. Vic swallowed, licking his lips, then repeated both motions. “Did somebody force feed me tea made from dirty socks?” he grumbled weakly.

“I can make you some better tea,” Aidan answered, chuckling, “but no. That’s not a side effect of my work, either. Perhaps you should examine your recent diet?”
